INTERREG ChemClimCircle

The linear mindset of our current consumption patterns is responsible for 45 per cent of total greenhouse gas emissions – for example, from the production of clothing or food. It is therefore imperative to transform the way we produce and consume goods: A shift towards an environmentally friendly circular economy is needed. However, this also requires materials that are not contaminated with hazardous chemicals throughout their life cycle.

ChemClimCircle addresses an important gap that urgently needs to be addressed and has so far not been pushed at European, national or regional level: The link between chemicals, climate and circularity in public procurement. Materials need to be toxic-free, climate-neutral and circular for a circular economy to work safely. Ensuring the sustainable procurement process in municipalities is a central key to shaping a circular future.

ChemClimCircle will develop a functioning concept that takes into account all important sustainability aspects as well as interdependencies and conflicting goals. For this purpose, previous procurement processes will be evaluated, interviews with all stakeholders will be conducted, spaces for dialogue will be created and workshops will be initiated in order to ultimately arrive at an international strategy with which the three aspects of chemicals, climate and circularity can be comfortably integrated into public procurement.
