LIFE MUMs – Minimising Unseen Molecules

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are present in many everyday products, including cosmetics, cleaning products, plastics, textiles and food packaging. Scientific evidence shows that exposure to these substances can pose health risks, particularly during sensitive life stages such as pregnancy and early childhood.

LIFE MUMs (Minimising Unseen Molecules) supports pregnant people, families and healthcare professionals in identifying and reducing exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals. The project aims to translate scientific knowledge into practical prevention measures and contribute to healthier living conditions for current and future generations.

LIFE MUMs combines digital tools, healthcare, research and public awareness activities into a comprehensive European prevention approach. At the heart of the project is the further development of the proven CheckED tool into the CheckED Pink Edition, specifically designed to support people during pregnancy. The tool  assesses your personal risk of exposure to EDCs and provides personalised recommendations to help you identify sources of exposure in your daily life and choose safer alternatives.

Household intervention studies will be carried out in eight European countries to test practical measures for reducing exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals and to evaluate their effectiveness. In parallel, a biomonitoring study will assess exposure levels among pregnant people and examine how behavioural changes can contribute to reducing chemical burdens.

Another key component of the project focuses on the healthcare sector. Midwives, gynaecologists, obstetricians, nurses and medical students will receive training and practical resources to better integrate environmental health and chemical risk prevention into maternal healthcare and counselling.

A Europe-wide communication campaign will complement these activities by raising awareness of endocrine-disrupting chemicals, promoting healthier and more sustainable consumer choices, and strengthening understanding of the links between environmental quality and human health.

Through its One Health approach, LIFE MUMs contributes to key European policy objectives, including the EU Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability, the Zero Pollution Action Plan and EU4Health. The project develops practical and transferable solutions that can be integrated into healthcare systems, educational programmes and policy frameworks across Europe.
