Urban environment
The urban environment is strongly determined by human activities. Dense settlement, concentrated industries and traffic are the main determinants on the urban environment. The stress caused by noise and air pollutants, such as nitroxides, ozone or particulate matter, are issues which already found their way into the public awareness. On the political level this development is reflected by numerous EU directives and resulting adjustments of the national legislation. But also less strongly debated issues such as land sealing, low urban biodiversity and switching to more environmentally modes of transport should belong on the agenda when talking about a healthy environment.
The Balic Environmental Forum aims at treating the urban environment as a whole and tries not to neglect the inter-connections to other environmental issues. How much sense makes a new, especially energy-efficient house, maybe even builit in passive house technology, if the owners commute to work 30 kilometers every day with his old car, maybe even with two cars. This small example wants to illustrate why a holistic approach is so important for our work.
