Waterlogging and grassland extensification in Lower Saxony to improve habitats of the Corncrake (Crex crex) and the Black-tailed Godwit (Limosa limosa)

Allgemeines zum Projekt

Background
limosa.gif
This LIFE-project aims at meadow bird protection. Various meadow birds are endangered because of the drainage and intensively agricultural use of grasslands. In this project the most important habitants of the Corncrake (Crex crex) and the Blacktailed Godwit (Limosa limosa) shall be optimized in 12 project areas across Lower Saxony and the East Frisian Islands through waterlogging, grassland extensification and cooperation with local farmers.

The overall goal of the project is to increase fledging rates and breeding success of the birds. Thus, relevant stakeholders will be included in the project process at regularly held “round tables”. Furthermore, flyers, brochures and a project website will be developed to disseminate information about the project.

Not only Corncrake and Blacktailed Godwit will benefit from the planned measures, but also other priority meadow birds such as the Eurasian Curlew (Numenius arquata), Common Redshank (Tringa tetanus), Common Snipe (Gallinago gallinago), Ruff (Philomachus pugnax) and Peewit (Vanellus vanellus).

BEF Germany will be responsible for the “round tables” on the East Frisian Islands, as well as for the project website, flyers and brochures.
