Environmental communication as an instrument for a successful implementation of EU directives in SMEs in the Baltic States
General information
Background![]() The Baltic Environmental Forum Group has noted a communication deficit in small and medium sized enterprises in the Baltic States with regard to environmental issues and compliance with environmental legislation in supply chains. Meanwhile, the understanding for these problems is growing and the goal of the project was, to identify supply chains in three selected braches (printing, metal, furniture), to establish better communication paths and to eliminate environmental deficits. Activities in the projectCommunication paths and solutions for identified environmental problems should be elaborated along three supply chains – in the furniture, metal and printing industry. Environmental problems can be identified in all three sectors, e.g. when treating waste or when using chemicals. There are information deficits among employees and difficulties to establish environmental managements. This results in non-compliance or only partly compliance with environmental legislation. Approximately 30 “core”enterprises shall identify their supply chains and establish better communication paths. With the help of seminars, working groups, home work and international exchange, the environmental problems shall be identified, solutions shall be presented, the legal background on handling environmental risks shall be clarified, and the communication process shall be initiated. Target group is small and medium sized enterprises, according to the EU definition.
