Capacity building for East-European NGOs
Vital non-governmental organisations are a key element of a modern civil society. Their activities range from providing social services to underprivileged people, they are active in the field of culture and education and one of the areas largely covered by NGOs concerns the matter of environmental protection.
NGOs are important not only for a liberal democratic society, but particularly in a parochial society with a low public engagement from the midst of the citizens, non-governmental organisations are front runners and lighthouses of occupying areas of public interest outside governmental spheres.
Yet, much altruism is needed to keep especially a non-profit non-governmental organisation running, even in Western Europe with a rich and broad range of organisations, where especially the larger NGOs may finance their operational costs through stable incomes from membership fees or national or
subsistence funding. For their counterparts in Eastern Europe the situation looks even more challenging. There citizens are much less committed to public, charitable work and the general interest in politics is much lower.
Therefore BEF seeks to engage and support non-governmental organisations in Easter Europe in continuing their work, expanding their fields of expertise and improving their visibility within the civil society.
